That wasn't always the case though, they made Half-Life: Opposing Force which was a great expansion but this isn't the same gearbox as it was in the late 90s early 2000s. Gearbox at this point is more well known for screwing up franchises then improving them.

Not a lot of people have faith in Gearbox, they've only ever made really one big franchise that's resonated with people and that's Borderlands. Not to mention the fact Gearbox is also involved. There wasn't nearly as bad reception around Shadow Warrior as there is for Duke now. There was a lot of room for Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog to make something out of it. Forever was trapped in development hell for almost 13 years and Shadow Warrior only had one game and two expansions. Shadow Warrior was also in a significantly better situation than Duke is. Also not retroactively making Duke Nukem 3D worse by removing the only digital version of the game with all the expansions, then replacing it with a version of the game where the only benefit is improved Lighting and a 3D renderer. I think people would be more optimistic if they took the IP more seriously and not reduce Duke to just have cameo appearances in other games. Unless GB decides on pulling a Shadow Warrior styled comeback out their arse I see this as nothing but a bad move. The only thing we know for sure is that 3D Realms is perfectly willing to release these builds and the only thing standing in its way is either Randy or 2K. He wants to monetize these builds of the game and sell them in some sort of ultimate Duke collection or something (it wouldn't be the first time Gearbox sold us an unfinished build of a game). Randy is so high on sniffing his own farts he honestly believes there is something out there they can do to bring Duke back into the spotlight and he wants to wait for the right moment to do it.ģ. IF we believe Randy's claims then it's up to 2K and not him (I don't see why 2K would care if Beta and Alpha builds of DNF were released or not, he even said he didn't think 2K cares that much about DNF).Ģ. There could be many reasons as to why they won't release these builds.ġ. Why are they so protective of an IP they literally don't give a flying fuck about? It'd be really nice to see this come out, it even has the potential to put Duke in a major spotlight again as the legendary 2001 Forever build is what mostly everyone actually wanted, however unless Gearbox decides overwise it'll never happen.
